DĺA DE LOS MUERTOS – DAY OF THE DEAD
A time for a focus on Mexico and one of their most important holidays called – Day of the Dead. Although this is celebrated on October 31, November 1st and 2nd and coincides with Halloween, this is NOT a holiday about scaring young children. This fiesta is all about honoring family ancestors. Families visit the cemeteries, have fiestas, build offerings on altars and tell many stories about their loved ones. Skulls/skeletons are an important part of these celebrations. They represent death and help to introduce this concept to children. As calaveras always have a mocking grin in order to show the ironical nature of the calavera – they believe it is the living that struggle to stay alive and keep up with the hectic ways of life.
On reflection from articles in our JUNTOS book, we read about Chocolate con Churros and la Tortilla Española – which is NOT similar to the Mexican tortilla we know to be like a chapati we eat here. No… Sra. Tamara made us our own Tortilla Española which is actually a Potato, Onion Omelet cooked in Olive Oil (one of Spain’s largest exports), and is a tortilla española eaten in cafés and restaurants all around Spain.
I really enjoyed this unit, it was SUPER bueno.
