In Grado 4 we have been practicing asking and answering basic questions (some examples of these questions have previously been posted on the blog) in Spanish. What better way to practice our new skills than to actually communicate with other Spanish students around the world! Fortunately, Señora Tamara has a collegial friend in Colorado – Señorita Davison – who also teaches Spanish to Kinder through Grado 5 students at Dillon Valley Elementary. A picture of some of our high-school amigos is here. They are a dual language school and so we expect that their Spanish is going to be FABULOSO! We are excited to announce that they have just received our first ‘Cartas de Amigo de Pluma’ (Pen Pal Letters) and have eagerly read them and are preparing their responses – they even made a post about receiving them on their blog. We anxiously await for ‘el Correo’ to deliver their ‘cartas’. The pictures below are of us with our ‘marionetas’ so our amigos/amigas know who we are. (We created these puppets in Art class and have written ‘dialogos’ and recorded videos in Spanish class.)

During the past couple of weeks, el Grado 3 has been practicing and using family vocabulary and descriptions. They created an ALBUM de FAMILIA that included a personal description of themselves and three descriptions of three different family members.
They were very creative and clever in their introductions of their family members.
Some of the ‘frases’ and their meanings were:

Se llama _________ = He/she calls him/herself ___________

Tiene ___ años = He/she is ___ years old (has ___ years)

Tiene ojos _____ (color) = He/she has (color) eyes.

Tiene pelo _____ (color, length, type) = He/she has (type) of hair.

Grado 5 – LIBROS de LUGARES – el verbo ‘IR’

En el Grado 5 students created LIBROS de LUGARES – Books of Places. The objective of this assignment was (1) to use the verb ‘ir’ ‘to go’ en español and know how the verb changes when using it with a variety of subjects (the people doing the ‘going’ somewhere); (2) to learn and practice vocabulary dealing with places around a city, and/or in a school and (3) to tell someone about where and when, they and their family/friends are going to, to do special activities. After completing their books, students were assessed on the following criteria:

-Aparencia/Legibilidad/Calidad (Appearance/Legibility/Quality
-Gráficas/Dibujos (Graphics/pictures)
-Contenido & Variedad (Content & Variety)
-El uso de Ir + a (Use of the verb Ir, to go + to)
-Creatividad (Creativity)
Students also practiced asking and answering questions using ¿A dónde vas? Where are you going?

SUBJECT PRONOUNS … los SUJETOS

We are now reviewing subject pronouns and how they are used with verbs. The subject of the sentence is the ‘doer’ of the action. For example: He eats fast. ‘He’ is the subject, he does the eating (the action). A subject pronoun is a ‘pro’, or word, used and put in place of/or in support of a ‘noun’. Such as ‘He’, instead of using the person’s name, or in place of the dog, or whoever, or whatever the subject is, the subject pronoun ‘he’ is used.

The subject pronouns in Spanish are:
yo = I
tú = you (informal)
él = he
ella=she
nosotros = we
nosotras = we (if all chicas)
vosotros = y’all (informal Spain)
vosotras = y’all (informal all chicas Spain)
ellos = they
ellas = they (if all chicas)

los CUENTOS en forma de video … VIDEO STORIES

For the past couple of weeks the fifth grade Spanish students have been working either individually or in pairs on video-story telling projects.

The objectives of this project for students were:

– to utilize prior Spanish vocabulary and skills to create a basic story
– to incorporate geography and mapping vocabulary
– to include story telling elements – an introduction, small dilemma and resolution, character description, and conclusion and …
– to use proper pronunciation while acting out the story

The criteria: Title and authors, written story-line, recording of story, at least 6 pictures/drawings, list of newly introduced vocabulary, and an ending.

Students worked very hard on these and now have a new appreciation for the hard work and effort that goes into creating a video story. The entire collection of video stories can be seen by clicking here. Look for student comments and feedback at the bottom of the videos.
